Andile Maphumulo is a South African contemporary artist born in 1990 at Imfume Mission in the KwaZulu-Natal south coast.
My work is inspired by the arrangement of objects situated in intimate and domestic spaces of black communities in post-apartheid South Africa. The objects and materials we use in our daily lives and select to occupy our spaces speaks a lot about who we are and our evolution. The objects we use in our daily life speak a lot about who we are and our progression in the material we choose to live with. The absence of human figures in my paintings illuminates the objects in the space. I use paint as a medium of expression as I am drawn to the power of its liquidity. I associate the liquid state of the medium with the quality of humanness, as we are all born from liquid. I feel this relates very well to my subject matter. I use bright colours in my background to show love, harmony, and bright futures that people hope for even if they come from unprivileged communities.
