Lindelwa Msimang is a South African contemporary artist born in 2001 at Edendale in Pietermaritzburg. Lindelwa has had a love for art since primary school, but she found herself studying civil engineering. Following high school, she rekindled her passion for artmaking by taking up photography.
My work celebrates the masculinity and gender fluidity within my identity. I am more of a masculine female that has never been free to express my identity due to my surroundings. The spacious landscapes that emerge in my work represent the freedom and peace that I have been longing for my entire life. Roses are featured in my current work to speak about the fragility and the vulnerability that one can find when they are longing for freedom of expression. By including the figure of the photographer in my work, it is a commentary on the evolution of the camera a personal reflection on using the camera as a tool to both expose and mask identity.
