Mzamo Mlambo is a South African artist and graphic designer born in 1990 in a small mission called Osindisweni in KwaZulu-Natal. He grew attached to art in primary school where he used to draw with sticks on the ground. He has fond memories of his granny covering the illustrations when it rained to protect his artwork.
My work is about creating utopian spaces that are innovative, uncompromising, romantic, and emotive. These are all elements that describe the urban lifestyle. From my childhood, I use to like playing the classic video game Tetris. The game features differently shaped blocks which drop at various speeds, and as the blocks descend, the player must rotate and arrange them to neatly fit together. When the player forms one or more solid, uninterrupted horizontal row, the completed rows disappears. The goal of the game is to prevent the blocks from crossing the threshold at the top of the screen for as long as possible. For me, Tetris, and the blocks, represent daily life—the mechanics of play are unchanging despite evolving strategies to succeed. My work is inspired by the game and utilises 3D forms and bold colours to express movement through the modern world. It is about celebrating everything we have achieved as humankind while recognizing the inequalities that arise in processes of rebuilding.
