Hlela was born in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal in South Africa year 1995. During high school he attended art classes at the Tatham Art Gallery. He moved to Durban to study Fine Art at the Durban University of Technology in 2014. He did not complete his diploma, yet he continued to make and produce art.
Hlela’s work consist of drawing and painting, mostly paintings. He focuses on portraiture and also figurative paintings. In his work he explores the idea of using the colour green as energy to help bring balance, calm, stillness to his anxiety and depression in his life and mostly to his creative journey. Spiritually the colour green, it is believed to be colour of healing; it is beneficial in all healing situation. His medium is acrylic paint on canvas. The figures or his subject are represented in dark rich tone of shades green. He explores a mark making technique and follows a process of flat painting technique. He draws his inspiration from music, popular culture, fashion, relationships, the people in his surroundings and spirituality. His work aims engage in dialog to inspire the youth and the importance of self-love.
