Nhlakanipho Peace Ndimande is a South African multi-media artist born in 1990 at Dassenhoek, Marianhill in Durban. He studied at Durban University of Technology where he acquired a diploma in Fine Art.
My work critiques social media as a symbol of modernity and its influence on African communities. I question the role of social media in identity and language formation and its power to create submissive subjects. For example, I play with the symbolism of emojis, or emoticons, and their everyday use as replacements to expressing emotion. I utilise mixed media including ink, acrylic paints, and masking fluid to tattoo my figures with emojis and social media icons. This reflects an attachment to a digital universe and the use of social media as a lexicon of self-expression and sense of identity. The liquid media I work with –inks and acrylics—speak to liquid and water as a source of life. I associate this liquidity with the fragility and ephemerality of human beings and human nature.
