Thembi Mthembu

Thembisile Mthembu is South African multi-disciplinary artist born in 1992 from eNseleni Township in KwaZulu-Natal. Thembi currently resides in Durban, and she holds a B-Tech in photography from Durban University of Technology.   

My work explores the notions and politics surrounding the body. I often use my own body as a site for artistic exploration of these themes. My work draws inspiration from personal experience growing up, and it looks at contemporary discourses around cosmetic surgery as a means of conforming to societal standards of beauty. I respond to this through my art to offer recourse that teaches society to love, celebrate, and embrace their unique attributes and their imperfect bodies, especially those of African women.
